Montebello Design Centre: A Secret Delight
Montebello Design Centre in Newlands is one of Cape Town’s secret delights. In a treed estate in Newlands, you can explore art and craft studios, watch the processes used to create beautiful handmade objects and meet the makers. There are bead workers, wood & cement sculptors, artists and ceramists. It’s a hive of creative activity and innovation!
The Montebello Design Centre shop offers a range of vivid and useful accessories for living with beauty in a material world. A medley of tactile crafted-by-hand textiles and textures in linen, wool, stone, wood, bone, clay, metal, glass, paper and woven grasses, sourced from the local and neighbouring communities and migratory cultures.
The Mogalakwena studio showcases exquisite embroidered homeware items from a project supporting rural women in Limpopo. Tintiloux makes organic body care products using traditional artisanal methods and next door is African Ethos, makers of African musical instruments. The David Krut Gallery displays cutting edge South African art and stocks a range of art books for all ages.
Visit Flavour Union, Farm Kitchen Table and Brew Kombucha for innovative, organic products designed for healthy living.
Keep an eye on the Classes page of the Montebello website and Facebook page to see the range of classes and workshops offered by specialists in the Butterfly Art Studio and other studios.
The Greenhouse Nursery stocks a range of special plants and gardeners’ favourite. Their specialists can offer advice on eco-friendly and drought orientated gardening.
After your exploration (or before!) treat yourself to breakfast, lunch, tea and delicious cakes and snacks at Gardeners’ Cottage. They also have a creative range of deli items.
Be inspired by the creatives and gain insight into the local arts and crafts that the city has to offer. Montebello Design Centre is certainly worth a visit – it’s a vibrant spot for ingenuity and beautiful creations.
