Andrea Brand: Art in A World of Impermanence

In a world of constant change, art and life are ever-evolving. We asked creative designer Andrea Brand to share her take on the world of impermanence and her latest collections – Art, Light and Matter. Here is what she had to share with us…

“We are living in a time of constant change and shift. How does one stay grounded and connected to oneself and the world, whilst everything is moving constantly? For me, the practice of fluidity has brought an ability to stay still within myself and still move with the ebbs and flows of my surroundings.”

Anicca

The new collection, called Anicca, mirrors the way we live in the world now. Anicca is the Pali (sacred language of Theravāda Buddhism) word for impermanence and refers to the Buddhist concept that all existence is temporary. As humans, we like to understand and be able to predict our futures to some degree. This ability has largely disappeared and we are left with the philosophical dilemma of uncertainty. To remain flexible and be able to dance with change are skills we need to learn and practice to enable us to continue to find and make meaning.

“The technique I used with the Anicca designs was to bring the elements of creativity, paint and water together and allowing it all to flow without interruption once I lifted my hand off the paper. There was minimal interference beyond the point of the initial intention to see what happens when all these elements are left to merge.”

“Because I did not hang on to the outcome of the designs during the creative process of the Anicca collection, it allowed other concepts to enter. My Art, Light and Matter light collection was born from this fluid state of mind. The light collection is a whole new direction for the application of my art. It is a fusion of art and light, displaying the fluid and creative relationship between art and various materials through surface design.”

Art, Light and Matter

Most of the Art, Light and Matter pieces are designs printed on Perspex. This is mounted in custom-designed aluminum frames with lighting from behind. The Rocket is a standing light with a long tubular design mounted on hand crafted wooden legs. All these pieces subsequently bring visual texture – that final layer in a space that brings both warmth and depth.

Furthermore, the Art, Light and Matter pieces are about the finishing touches we bring to a space to create atmosphere and connection. They subsequently create a feeling of intimacy in spaces. They furthemore pull all the separate interior elements together. All the pieces are thus custom designed and prospective clients can select any design from Andrea’s current and past collections.
