Shuttleworth Weaving: Handmade Rugs Crafted in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
In the misty hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Shuttleworth Weaving continues a practice that feels both ancient and quietly contemporary. Here, rugs are not manufactured at speed but created through a careful dialogue between fibre, hand, and loom, each piece carrying the character of the people who made it.
The process begins with material. Natural fibres such as South African mohair and Namibian Karakul wool form the foundation of many designs, valued for their strength, warmth, and tactile richness. New Zealand wool is also introduced to create varied textures, while upcycled polypropylene provides a durable option suited to high-use environments. Each fibre is chosen not only for appearance but for how it behaves when spun and woven.
Spinning remains a craft in itself. Using traditional wooden treadle wheels, skilled spinners transform raw fibre into yarn, adjusting weight and tension by instinct and experience. The studio is gradually introducing small electric motors powered by an off-grid solar system, easing the physical strain while preserving the handmade nature of the process.
Colour follows. Yarns can be dyed to match a specific palette, allowing for both contemporary and bespoke designs. Acid dyes provide rich, colour-fast tones, and the studio’s exhaust dyeing process ensures that the pigment is fully absorbed by the fibre, leaving minimal environmental impact.
Weaving itself is a collaborative act. On large floor looms – some measuring up to 8.5 metres wide – weavers work together, passing the shuttle through tightly stretched warp threads to create rugs that are both durable and visually layered.
Operating from a smallholding and living largely off-grid, the Shuttleworth Weaving team approaches craft with the same care they apply to the land around them. The result is textiles that embody patience, sustainability and the enduring beauty of handmade work.
