Plascon House Tour: A Chic Tiny Melbourne Home

Never underestimate the size of a home. Size should not determine the impact and style of an interior. This is ever true in today’s chic tiny house situated in Melbourne. At only 96 square metres, this home may be small but makes a big first impression.

Whiting Architects quickly rose to the challenge, seeing this tiny ‘pocket house’ as an opportunity to prioritise quality of space over quantity.

With its abundance of light, clever use of integrated storage and appliances, considered monochromatic white, grey and black palette and elevated roof terrace, this Melbourne home’s small footprint has arguably led to a more efficient and creative use of space that is perfectly suited to the lives of its inhabitants.

It’s all in the colour…

A colour scheme can make or break a home. For this tiny home, designers opted to keep things neutral and contemporary. A monochrome black, grey and white colour palette is timeless and the simplicity enhances the sense of space.

The kitchen is designed as cohesive part of the interior, rather than a separate space, with sleek cabinetry, integrated appliances and black oven by Fisher & Paykel. We love the seamless look of appliances hidden behind cabinets for a more pulled-together, cohesive design which cleverly maximizes the space and storage capabilities.

The kitchen and laundry are one continuous run of joinery, with the laundry cleverly concealed under the stairs. Designers had to think out of the box to make the most of the available floor plan.

City Views…

The opportunity to capture city views via a roof terrace meant that it was possible to use almost the entire small block for the building, while still providing outdoor space (important for the clients’ large dog). The terrace also provided an opportunity for an extra long skylight over the hallway, accentuating a sense of volume as you arrive in the new addition. The central courtyard was fully maximised, with windows accessing the available light from three sides.

As the house is single story, the challenge was fitting the home’s living and functional kitchen, dining and bathroom spaces within a mere 32m2.

Filling the space with light and maintaining height was key to creating a feeling of spaciousness. The long skylights in the dining and living areas capture the precious north light, and the internal courtyard brings natural light into the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.

The end result is a completely innovative and chic little home with everything one might need for modern living.
