DDL: African-Themed Luxury

French Chateau, Italian Villa, even Hygge – International style has been dominating the interior design scene for a long time. This year, however, Decorex – Africa’s premium design exhibition – brought décor home with the rebirth of African flair.

“Africa is finally emerging as a dominant influencer in regards to décor style… We are seeing a much more organic incorporation of African elements into all aspects of design – materials, patterns, colours and furniture,” said Anita Bloom, Creative Director at Decorex SA.

This year Decorex SA stimulated the creative juices of visitors, designers and industry leaders with a theme we can all relate to: Designing for Africa—feels like home.

“…there is something inherently African that flows through us all – it’s that element of being at home,” notes Bloom.

Held between 7 and 11 August, Decorex hosted a plethora of trends, products and designs that depict various elements of African style, fusing the influences of international trend-makers with the unique colour and vibrancy that characterizes local people and cultures.

In addition to a visual treat, visitors to Decorex Joburg also enjoyed trendy, stylised restaurants and bar areas located throughout the exhibition space, offering quality food and drink menus.

As a leader in the interior design and décor industry, Design and Décor Lab showcased its unique approach to luxurious Africanism with a striking combination of colours, textures and designs.

“Good interior designers and decorators know that creating a space is about sparking emotion and inspiring a sensory experience. DDL definitely achieved this with their beautiful exhibition,” commented a visitor.

In contrast to last year’s rich velvet opulence, DDL displayed a combination of vivacious prints and accessories inspired by a variety of societal and cultural expressions. While previously reserved for high-end retreats ad tourism locations, this luxury interior design house revealed how African luxury can be brought into every South African home.

“While glamorous design is always at the forefront of our minds, this year we wanted to show South Africans how to use local inspiration and culture to express their own, unique take on African style,” concludes Ridwaan, Head Designer at DDL.
