Italtile Presents The New-Age Kateka Lodge

Unique Kateka Lodge, deep in the pristine wilderness of the Klaserie Reserve, opened its doors in October 2023 to a new generation of safari seekers. Kateka bravely disrupts the traditional concept of the thatched bush lodge and game drive package, with a fresh new framing of the top-end safari offering.

According to the Robb Report, South African-born owner Joel Ospovat noticed the rising trend of micro-camps, and created Kateka to reposition the “Luxury African Safari” for the contemporary international and local tourist looking for something more than a bush break.

Construction began in January 2022, and Ospovat’s idea of  “Wellness in the Wilderness” started to take shape, with design, destination and decompression front and centre. Doors opened in October 2023, offering a holistic experience like no other, in the embrace of pristine wilderness.

In order to elevate the desired aesthetic of Warm Minimalism, Orbic Architects and New Design Interiors reached out to Italtile Commercial’s agent in Mpumalanga, Willem Pretorius, to select superior eco-chic finishes for the Wellness Centre and Reception area, as well as eight Villas, three Classic Suites and two Deluxe Rooms. (High-end porcelain tiles, sanware, baths and tapware were required.)

To bring the proposed neutral colour palette to life, Willem chose superb porcelain tiles offering a mix of superbly replicated stone looks – the hewn alpine rock feel of Klif Dark and Klif Grey (750 x 1500) by Atlas Concorde, the lush, variegated swirls and ripples of Mystic Ocean (900 x 1800) by Ceramica Sant’Agostino and Saint Laurent’s mighty slabs (1200 x 2400), with their gleaming black marble looks and contrasting white and gold ripples.

Superb freestanding Lussari Baths by V&A Baths set the cocooning tone for each sophisticated spa-style sanctuary, along with LAUFEN’s contemporary classic Palace range of sanware, Cotto basins, and the finishing touch of elegant New Road tapware by Tivoli.

With 5-star reviews pouring in after only one year, Ospovat has proof positive that his vision has grown a hugely appreciative audience, upon whom the unique Kateka experience is leaving a lasting impression at a soul level.
