Sungani Lodge: An Authentic Experience in Zambia
A passion for Africa and each family member’s unique set of skills have wrought Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp. Transforming this area of the South Luangwa National Park from a state of neglect into something quite extraordinary.
The journey kicked off early in 2019. A father and son, along with a few local people, arrived near nightfall and had to spend the night in what were the old ruins of the site. The first few months had them sharing their accommodations with bats, snakes and various other creatures! Cooking on a fire. Bread freshly baked in the ground. The story of Sungani had begun in this untouched corner of Africa.
Becoming a custodian
By April the project was underway. Many people from the local communities were subsequently employed again, or for the very first time. Everything: from the architecture and interior design down to the last detail on each scatter cushion has truly been a family collaboration. Much of what you see has thus been created on-site.
Furthermore, Zambia is regarded as one of the last true wildernesses. Here visitors help to contribute towards the Sungani promise as the lodge embarks on this journey to become custodian and keeper – enabling Sungani to give back in the years to come.
Interior styling and luxury
This stunning bathroom at Sungani lodge is a light-filled space. It subsequently combines sleek, polished concrete surfaces with Victoria + Albert Baths’ Shropshire freestanding tub and a pair of Radford 51 basins.
“Victoria + Albert Baths’ products added a sophisticated and elegant finish to our property,” says Jordan. “The contrast of the dark polished concrete with the striking white baths and basins provides an understated luxury in a unique safari setting.”
Privacy and relaxation
As you can see, the lodge has been designed with privacy and relaxation in mind. It is a joy to tell you that the majority of what you will find at Sungani has been created by the family and local people.
Skills taught and learnt, calamities overcome, culminating in some quirky details that add to the relaxed atmosphere and charm. Structures edged by a bountiful lagoon and sheltered by magnificent indigenous trees, showcasing the natural tones of the bush, blend seamlessly into the landscape.
The entire lodge is built on elevated decking, affording the ability to wander around during the day. The main area of the lodge has a variety of living spaces where your time is uninterrupted, and the space is yours to do as you please.
Consequently, it’s beautiful inside and out – a soulful, restful place. Sungani is subsequently designed by a family who is dedicated to restoring and protecting Africa. It’s an experience that is unhurried, authentic and deeply emotive.
