Cape Cod homes are characterised by steep roofs with gables, large dormer windows, double-hung windows, wood shutters and clapboard or wood-shingle siding.

While it may not be possible to change all the architectural elements of a home, be sure to try and incorporate one or two of these design details.

Opt for coastal colours

Whether inside or out, traditional coastal colours work best when decorating in the Cape Cod style. Think white and sand hues, ocean blues and sage greens. A pop of sunny yellow, sunset orange or vibrant coral also works well.

Choose textured materials

Rattan, burlap, thick-woven linen, grasscloth, wood, natural stone and textured wallpaper all work well in Cape Cod designs, creating a warm, natural setting.

Opt for rustic furnishings and fittings
