Streamlight Presents DCW’s Icon Of The 20th Century
DCW Editions is a producer of objects: objects whose roots are in the past, whose use is in the present and whose vision is for the future, all of which have three things in common: They are well-conceived, well designed and well made. Today we are celebrating the icons of modern design with a closer look at the life of Bernard-Albine GRAS and how he has shaped our world of lighting today.
In 1921 Bernard-Albin GRAS designed a series of lamps for use in offices and in industrial environments. The GRAS lamp, as it was subsequently called, was astounding in its simple, robust and yet very ergonomic design. There are neither screws nor welded joints in the basic form. In 1927 the Ravel company purchased the patent and started production of the Gras lamps.
Bernard-Albin Gras was one of the most innovative designers of the 20th century. The functional esthetic of his lamps and especially the design of details such as those of the arms, stems, brackets and bases were truly original and far ahead of his time. Early on Le Corbusier was seduced by the modern design and user-friendliness of the lamps and became one of Bernard-Albin GRAS’s most enthusiastic supporters.
La Lampe Frechin
DCW’s production is the epitome of the object as a companion to living well, an object that is designed to last and act as a relay baton between generations. But nostalgia for the past is not what drives DCW Editions. All that matters is to produce objects that are true, honest and will stand the test of time. The various collections – Lampe Gras, Mantis, In The Tube, The ISP Lamp, Here Comes the Sun, Les Acrobates de Gras, the MbE Mirrors… – are in permanent dialogue with each other, testament to DCW Editions’ commitment to producing timeless objects that never give in to fashion.
You can find the latest collections from DCW Editions available locally at Streamlight. They offer clientele a wide suite of exclusive, high-end, globally and locally renowned lighting brands, such as Estiluz, Arturo Alvarez, DCW, Grok, Karman, Schwung and Dark – to name a few. These masterworks can be viewed at a prestigious showroom in Kramerville.
Playing with the contrasts between materiality and immateriality, presence, absence, and revelation of light, la Lampe Frechin offers a sensitive experience of optics between science and magic. By confronting timeless materials (marble, glass, aluminum), and a poetic approach to technology, it illuminates as much as it irradiates spaces.
