Andrew Martin Unveils Interior Designer of The Year Award
Now in its 24th year, the Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award is a celebration of the most talented designers from every corner of the globe.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars of the design world’ it was the first international design award and previous winners are a who’s who of the design firmament, from Kelly Hoppen, the first winner in 1996, to Axel Vervoodt, Nicky Haslam and Rose Uniacke.
Andrew Martin is delighted to announce that it is Shanghai-based designer, Ben Wu, who wins the badge of honour this year – the first designer from mainland China to receive the accolade.
‘Ben Wu is at the vanguard of China’s golden generation of interior designers.’
Having worked in the interiors industry for more than 20 years, Ben’s journey into design began with his studies of traditional Chinese ink paintings with Mr. Fu Wenyan, the last student of Zhang Daqian, a legendary Chinese artist. In 1998, Wu established WS DESIGN, which now develops multiple design and lifestyle brands including W.DESIGN, WS SPACE, Weimo and Haishang.
From Shanghai to New York, Wu has worked on both residential and commercial projects, consistently applying his personal ‘Modern Oriental’ design philosophy to each. It is an ethos which integrates the elegant design of Western humanism with Eastern aesthetics and philosophical thinking, creating a new style of interiors that has become a mainstream pillar of Chinese design.
As a designer, he is widely involved from public space to private clubs, from celebrities’ mansions to protected historical structures, as well as art exhibitions.
