The zebra is recognised by its distinctive black and white striped coat and has inspired vibrant African folk tales across generations. Ancient Namibians believed the zebra was once all white, gaining its black stripes after a fight with a baboon over a waterhole. The zebra kicked the baboon so hard, that it lost its balance and stumbled into the baboon’s fire. Burning sticks left scorch marks on the zebra’s white coat, creating the black stripes. The combined stripes of zebra herd create camouflage which confuses their predators. That is why a herd of zebras is called a ‘dazzle.’
