    About Afrofurn

We started out in 1980 designing furniture and lighting by following trends within the marketplace. Over time we were approached to partner in specialized projects with unique targets, especially in bespoke applications worldwide. In 2010 we were asked to design furniture & lighting for a physician’s family home in India. His scope included “a unique design, that stands out worldwide, the finishes must be predominantly gold, black and silver, subtle shadows cast in the ambient light without the light bulb being visible. The furniture & lighting must have the same look and feel. A 20-year full warrantee, with no conditions attached other than force and fire”.

A budget was set, and we embarked on compiling information. The materials that we had previously used in our designs proved very difficult to finalize a design for a bespoke set of products. We had recently designed product for the Taiwan Government using aluminum. The ability to laser cut aluminum had been successfully achieved in 2008 and we decided to use this process as our starting point. It was unique. The next problem was that our design was not conducive for a powder coated finish. The engineering tolerances were too tight, and it was ruled out.

My only option was to use an anodized finish. While anodizing in many ways produces a much better finish, it was expensive and very time consuming. After lengthy negotiations it was agreed to use this process.
