The Marvelous Metal Windows Men
It’s November – also known as Movember, so this month we want to turn the focus on the men in our lives and help raise awareness about those health concerns that affect men. Let’s start with the marvelous men that comprise the team at Metal Windows.
Metal Windows is a family business. Family, not just because MW is owned by Larry and his dad Dave. Family because they work together towards a common goal, to do a good job, to provide good service and as a result to support all the people and their families working at MW. Family, because they have many families working for and with the team – grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers, husbands – every person an important piece of the puzzle.
This month, we’re featuring some of the men of MW. There isn’t enough space to mention every man so we’ve chosen a few…Take the James brothers – Bennet, Mawethu and Vuyani James. The Abrams family, Naz and his brother Fuad and Fuad’s son Aziz. The Tape family brothers, Edmin, Jeff and his son Xavier. The Forman family with Dave, son Larry and his son Lennie.
Across the world, men die an average of six years younger than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesn’t have to be that way: we can all take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives.
Here are a few tips for better health and things you should consider as a man:
- Make man time. Stay connected. Your friends are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time. Communicate and share your feelings with your partner/ wife – use your words – this will prevent stress and anger from building up
2. Have open conversations. You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t have to be the sole solution, but being there for someone, listening and giving your time can be life-saving. 70% of men say their friends can rely on them for support, but only 48% say that they rely on their friends. In other words: we’re here for our friends, but worried about asking for help for ourselves. Reaching out is crucial.
3. Know the numbers. At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this conversation at 45. Know your numbers, know your risk, talk to your doctor or clinic.
4. Know thy nuts. Simple. Get to know what’s normal for your testicles. Give them a check regularly and go to the doctor if something doesn’t feel right.
5. Move, more. Add more activity to your day. Do more of what makes you feel good. Take a walk; park further away from the station; get off the bus a stop or two earlier or instead of the lift, take the stairs.
At MW, they have an open door policy between all management and staff. They believe that a positive relationship between members of the MW team will contribute toward even better service and workmanship for you the customer.
