Metal Windows Upgrades The V&A Hotel

Built in 1904 as the North Quay coal Warehouse and converted in 1990 to a luxury hotel, The Victoria and Alfred Hotel is one of the oldest buildings in the Waterfront. The hotel is named in honour of the Queen of England and her son Prince Alfred who visited the Cape in 1870 and officially opened the Breakwater basin, today’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

You can feel the ambience of colonial Cape Town as you step into the foyer, sense the past of shipwrecks and storms that colour every corner, then relax in the elegant contemporary bedrooms…. and savour the atmosphere of the world’s most famous working harbour. The windows installed at the time of the conversion to a hotel were wooden and had, despite maintenance, rotted.

The hotel management approached Metal Windows with four key goals in mind:

1. To replace the wooden windows and regain functionality.

2. To decrease the amount of noise in the guest rooms, from the busy waterfront below.

3. To improve thermal performance of the windows, to make the rooms more comfortable in the summer and winter with far less reliance on air conditioning and heaters.

4. To get the work done replacing the windows, while the hotel was still operating at full capacity! Metal Windows designed windows to meet all of these demands. The new windows are exact replicas of the old wooden windows but, have easy to open and ventilate casements, and are aluminium frames instead of wood. The aluminium windows installed are double glazed to dramatically decrease sound transmission. The addition of solar control glass greatly improves the windows thermal performance.

And finally each room was handed back to the hotel management on the same day that we replaced the windows, allowing the hotel to continue operating seamlessly.
