TrenDIY: Artificially age your own Terracotta Pots
Dreaming of a country-style garden? One of the basic elements to a country-looking garden is the use of terracotta pots. But new terracotta pots might not give you the ‘established’ and mature look that you’d like to achieve. Thanks to this nifty DIY from our experts at TrenDIY, here’s a simpler way to achieve the look for yourself.
There are various ways to age terracotta pots; some of which include lathering a pot with yoghurt and leaving it in a shady spot for at least a month. Using buttermilk and moss in a similar way and leaving it in a shady spot is also said to achieve the desired look. Alternatively, you can follow this simple 15-minute shortcut below: What you will need:
- Dishwashing sponge
- Terracotta pots
- Water
- White chalk paint
- Olive colour chalk paint (optional)
1. Prepare the surface
Dip your pots in water before starting the process and decant your paint into smaller containers.
2. Application of the white paint
Dip the sponge into the paint, applying the paint on parts of the pot. Use very little paint; you can always add more. Dip the sponge into water and start brushing the paint from left to right, giving it a ‘feathered look’. Repeat this step if you feel it is necessary.
3. Application of the olive colour paint
Make use of the olive colour paint, applying it in the same fashion, but using even less than the white paint
4. Planting your plants
After the paint has dried completely, you can place your plants into them. If you leave them exposed to the outdoors, they will start a natural wearing process over time, but at least you would have kick-started the process for them. All the paint products used for this make-over are available from your closest TrenDIY store. There are also experts in-store that will be able to assist with any questions you might have.
