Heat Transfer Through Your Roof
The largest heat loss across an un-insulated air-filled space (a building without insulation under the roof covering) is natural convection, for example, air conditioners, heaters, convection ovens. While you try to maintain a temperate indoor climate in winter, you also hike up your electricity bill (not to mention increase your carbon footprint). Interior climate control – heating, ventilating, and air conditioning – is one of the largest energy consumers throughout the world today.
The largest share of heat transmitted within a building is radiant heat, transferred in a downward flow from the roof. Your roof may have traditional bulk insulation to keep heat inside the home, ideal in winter. This is achieved by trapping air to eliminate significant convective heat loss through the roof. The multiple surfaces of bulk insulation only minimise the radiant heat of the sun entering the interior. The result is that the comfortable interior temperature is not maintained in the hot summer months.
