Garden Alert: Top Landscaping Ideas of 2017

With a continued drought affecting many of the provinces around South Africa, landscaping and outdoor gardening trends have shifted towards water-wise and eco-friendly designs that are helping us take better care of the natural world.

Here are some of the top landscaping ideas of 2017.

1. Lawn reimagined In times of drought, lush green grass often dies down as a result of water shortfalls. The end result can be quite an eyesore with brown patches where grass once flourished and unappealing sandy gardens. Consequently, we see a move towards synthetic turf in South African garden designs this season. With far fewer maintenance costs than real lawn, synthetic turf is also water-wise and evergreen – the perfect addition to a home or commercial garden.

2. Bright vivid colours Neutral palettes may be in right now when it comes to interior design, but the opposite is true for the outdoors. The Spring gardens of 2017 promise to come alive in full colour- this bold reds, violets, sunshine yellow and an array of greenery that will be a feast for the eyes.

3. Xeriscaping Xeriscaping is a hot new word in landscaping circles and refers to the conservation of water through creative landscaping. Choosing water-wise plants and succulents are key to its success. Originally developed for drought-afflicted areas, this trend has widening appeal to anyone looking for a low maintenance solution in the garden.

4. Vertical Gardening Where space is limited, especially in the bustling city, vertical gardens are a welcome feature to connect us to the natural world. Vertical gardens are a great choice for gardeners who don’t have a lot of floor space, want to cover an unsightly unattractive wall, or just want to be adventurous and grow things upwards. Vertical gardening kits are now available at various nurseries to help you get started.

5. Embracing local Hyperlocalism refers to the trend where landscapers are opting to source local products and plants for the garden. “Locally sourced” continues to be a buzzword in many industries, and garden designers too are seeing interest not just in native plants but endemic plants – those native to a very particular ecosystem.

6. Natural love We love the incorporation of natural elements into the landscaping of our outdoor areas. From rocks and boulders to overgrown hedges, climbers and even bark that forms a part of the garden. Looking for Garden Design Elements:  Landscaper or furniture shop on www.sadecor.co.za
