Cosy Homes, Happy Plants: Winter Care Tips from The Pot & Planter
While winter brings cosy moments indoors, it can be a challenging time for your potted plants. Drier air, shorter days, and fluctuating temperatures disrupt their natural rhythm, but with a little extra care, you can keep your green companions flourishing all season long.
Here, the team from The Pot & Planter, Johannesburg’s trusted stockist of premium pots and planters, share smart tips for keeping your indoor greenery happy and healthy during the colder months. Be inspired with The Pot and Planter
- Guard Against the Cold:
Indoor plants prefer stable conditions – ideally between 18–24°C during the day, and no lower than 10°C at night. Keep them away from cold draughts and never place them too close to heat sources like fireplaces or radiators. Well-insulated windows and a steady thermostat go a long way in keeping their microclimate just right. - Water Less, Wisely:
Your plants won’t be as thirsty in winter, and overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before watering, and use warm (not hot) water to keep their roots comfortable. Skip the fertiliser – this is their time to rest, not grow. - Chase the Light:
Light levels drop significantly in winter, so make the most of what’s available. Move your plants closer to sunny windows, rotate them regularly for even exposure, and wipe dust off leaves to help them absorb more light. If natural sunlight is scarce, supplement with full-spectrum grow lights. - Humidity is Key:
Use a humidifier or group plants together to boost humidity, or relocate them to steamy spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. With the right setup – and a beautiful pot to match – your plants will stay happy, healthy, and lush through the coldest months.
