TLW: We’re Mad About Lighting & Scandinavian Design
Scandinavian-inspired design is arguably one of the most popular styles of interior design today, says Melissa Davidson from leading lighting supplier, The Lighting Warehouse: “The Scandinavian design evolution has been adopted all over the globe, and here in South Africa as well. Its popularity can be attested to its distinct look, which has a strong focus on simplicity, minimalism and functionality.”
Melissa notes that the Scandinavian design style highlights the use of neutral tones, natural materials and clean design lines: “The style originated in the ‘50s as part of a modern movement in the Nordic countries. It was largely driven by this region’s short winter days and long winter nights, which called for bright, light and practical interior spaces. What made it so popular in the rest of the world was the call for a clutter-free lifestyle, and a move towards organic inspired designs.”
Melissa provides some tips on how to achieve this style in your home:
Neutral rules: Monochromatic colour schemes and neutral colours are at the core of this style. Serene, muted colours such as white, off-white, cream, charcoal and greys, can be used to great effect to create spaces that look bright and spacious. These neutral tones and monochromatic colour schemes serve as a great background that allows for any design features to create a maximum visual impact.
Clean design lines: Scandinavian design embraces symmetry, clarity, and minimalism – optimising functionality at the core of the design. Clean lines, organic shapes and neutral tones help create the feeling of spaciousness and airiness.
Organic shapes and materials: Scandinavian décor typically uses a lot of raw, organic materials, such as wood, and complimented with other manmade materials, such as metal, for example. Organic shapes are also very prevalent in this style, and used to great effect in a modern and contemporary way, for a clean and minimalist-inspired aesthetic.
