TLW: The Roadmap for Decorating like a Parisian

Audrey Hepburn once commented: “Paris is always a good idea”, and when it comes to design and décor, the Parisians have perfected the art of chic elegance. We speak to Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse about how to infuse your home with some sophisticated je ne sais quoi.

“Parisians have an unquestionable style that is forever on-trend – combining some old with the new in an ever fashionable package. It is a décor style that offers a timeless appeal, and one that is not too difficult to emulate,” Says Melissa. She offers the following tips on how to achieve it at home:

1.)  Old is good: One of the main underlying characteristics of this style is an appreciation of history and ageing. Says Melissa: “Old things bring a history, a richness and add interest to interior spaces. The Parisians have a deep appreciation for all things old, and infuse it into a space whenever they can. It is especially effective when it is juxtaposed with other items that are new and shiny. The Montpellier range of lighting from The Lighting Warehouse is a great example of this – it comprises antique-inspired pressed metal lamp shades in champagne, taupe and white, juxtaposed with the rest of the fittings which boasts modern lines.”

The Montpellier 4-light bar pendants retail for R1499,00 from The Lighting Warehouse and the Montpellier bankers lamps retail for R999,00.

2.)  Architectural focus: A typical Parisian apartment would have some tell-tale architectural assets, such as elaborate mouldings and ceilings, restored herringbone hardwood floors, large French doors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and so on.  “Even if your home is not blessed with these gorgeously decadent Parisian features, make sure that you make a feature out of the ones that it does have. For example, if your home has high ceilings, then add a large chandelier that will draw attention to your high ceilings,” explains Melissa.

3.)  A calling to Cubism: Popularised by Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, a touch of Cubism adds the essential avant-garde element that you will find in any Parisian apartment worth its salt. Says Melissa: “You can include subtle Cubist elements in the form of artwork, furniture or lighting for example. The cubism-inspired Toulouse range from The Lighting Warehouse would be a great addition for a touch of the unconventional and modern.”

The Toulouse range comprises a 4-light bar pendant (R1499,00), a 2-light bar pendant (R999,00), and a single pendant (R799,00). The range features white enamel pendants with black rim detailing, and it is available from The Lighting Warehouse.

4.)  A glimmer of gold: a major pillar of any well executed Parisian apartment is an unbridled abundance of glamour, and adding a touch of gold is often the key to achieving it. Says Melissa: “Adding the Midas touch to a composition is a great Parisian supplement – from a gilded mirror, to gold mosaic detailing in the bathroom, table legs finished in golden gilding, or a standout golden light fitting – the options are endless. The trick to success is to add just the right amount of gold – not too little, and not too much.”
