Protea Collection: An Icon of South African Design by Willowlamp
willowlamp‘s Protea Chandelier & Wall Sconce Collection is a tribute to South Africa’s national flower, reimagined in light. Originally designed by Adam Hoets in 2008, the Protea is one of willowlamp’s most iconic designs, epitomising the studio’s fusion of sacred geometry, contemporary craftsmanship, and sculptural form.
Characterised by multiple tiers of cascading ball chain veils, the Protea echoes the layered petals of its botanical namesake. Each piece is crafted from a laser-cut stainless steel frame, solid brass components, and willowlamp’s patented notch system that allows the chain to drape in fluid, fabric-like layers while holding the permanence of metal.
Available as suspended chandeliers, ceiling-mounted models, and a newly introduced wall sconce, the Protea collection brings versatility to both residential and hospitality interiors. Standard chandelier sizes range from 500mm to 1000mm in diameter, with the option of custom scaling for grand architectural settings. The wall sconce, measuring 300mm wide, extends the collection into a full design story for cohesive lighting schemes.
Lighting is provided by G9 halogen or LED lamps, with ETL certification covering the USA and Canada. Each design is available in willowlamp’s signature finishes: Black Oxide · Brass · Copper · Silver Chrome · Smoke Gunmetal · Mixed Metallics · White · Black · Red.
“The Protea is a symbol of diversity and courage,” says Hoets. “Translating that essence into a chandelier that is both technically precise and emotionally resonant was the challenge — and the joy — of this design.” From intimate dining spaces to large-scale lobbies, the Protea’s sculptural presence makes it a centre piece that is both meaningful and enduring.
