Orbit by Mash.T Design Studio: Telewire Reimagined in Contemporary South African Design
Movement, tension and balance converge in Orbit, the latest piece from Mash.T Design Studio. Crafted from telewire, copper and mild steel, the work carries a suspended, gravitational presence – elements circling a central axis, poised yet in motion, like satellites held mid-dance.
At its core, Orbit is both material exploration and cultural continuity. Telewire – originally developed for telecommunications infrastructure – has long since transcended its industrial origins. In KwaZulu-Natal, artisans began repurposing the flexible, durable wire into baskets, lighting and furniture, transforming a utilitarian material into a medium of intricate expression. Its strength allows for structure; its pliability invites gesture.
Mash.T draws on this lineage with deliberation. Founded in 2016, the South African designer-maker practice approaches lighting and furniture as sites of inquiry into form, memory and making. Through close collaboration with master artisans across the country, the studio reinterprets inherited techniques into contemporary objects that exist between sculpture and function.
In Orbit, telewire’s woven language becomes architectural. Copper introduces warmth and tonal contrast, while mild steel anchors the composition. The result is a piece that feels simultaneously engineered and organic, structured yet responsive.
Mash.T’s work is recognised internationally, forming part of the permanent collections at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Yet its foundation remains deeply rooted in local craft intelligence.
With ORBIT, Mash.T invites slower looking. The piece asks not only how it is made, but how material histories continue to circle forward; reworked, rebalanced and reimagined within contemporary design.
