MUD Studio’s signature lighting
d’Afrique avec amour
Lovingly handcrafted in South Africa, MUD Studio’s signature lighting designs carefully capture local arts and crafts heritage and skill, introducing it to a global platform.
Drawing on traditional arts and crafts techniques, such as beading, and making use of local materials, the light fittings imbue contemporary spaces with unique character and tactile appeal.
Some of the award-winning studio’s most striking designs include:
A visionary masterpiece born out of the creative collaboration between artist and designer Werner Du Toit and ceramic designer Philippa Du Toit in the early stages of 2005, this groundbreaking design was conceived as a response to the surplus of waste material generated within their studio, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and innovation. Beyond its aesthetic brilliance, the Mud Chandelier represents a beacon of social impact, catalyzing economic empowerment within the community. Overnight, the creation of this piece generated 20 job opportunities, subsequently supporting the livelihoods of over 100 families—a testament to its profound significance beyond the realm of art.
Inspired by the graceful allure of palm leaves swaying gently in the breeze, this exquisite lighting fixture captures the essence of tropical tranquillity and desert serenity. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each element of the LEAF Chandelier embodies a commitment to quality and sustainability. The chandelier features meticulously handcrafted ceramic leaves, delicately formed from recycled clay, infusing the design with an eco-conscious ethos. These elegant leaves, suspended from fine strings of ceramic beads adorned with handmade clay accents, create an enchanting interplay of light and shadow, casting a soft, inviting glow that enhances any space.
The magnificent Mud Beaded Dome is a true testament to artisan craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Crafted meticulously over weeks, each dome boasts an exquisite array of 5000 to 15000 hand-formed clay beads, meticulously strung together to form a breathtaking masterpiece. By day, the Beaded Dome captivates with its sculptural allure, commanding attention with its intricate design and intricate detailing. As night falls, it transforms, casting a subtle, enchanting glow that bathes its surroundings in a warm, inviting light. Designed with durability and versatility in mind, our beaded lights and chandeliers are expertly strung on stainless steel wire, ensuring resilience against rust and corrosion. This makes them not only suitable for coastal living but also perfect for outdoor use, adding a touch of sophistication to any space, indoors or out.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this captivating centrepiece commands attention with its enchanting presence. Adorned with an array of intricately patterned stoneware ceramic tiles, each meticulously chosen to harmonise with your interior decor, the chandelier exudes a sense of tropical splendour. From botanical motifs to abstract designs reminiscent of exotic flora, these tiles infuse the chandelier with texture and visual intrigue, transforming any room into a sanctuary of tropical delight.
Based in Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, MUD Studio has been the go-to for high-design ceramic decor since the creation of its first clay bead chandelier 18 years ago. The studio also manufactures bespoke furniture and stoneware dinnerware., as well as original artwork.
