Flip The Light On Design with Deborah Garth Interiors
Lighting is an ever important element in Interior Design. It comes in different forms and sources, some providing bigger and brighter light and others offering functional light. Lighting ranges from basic to intensely specialised and let’s admit it; we can’t live without it.
When an Interior Designer starts with the design concept, lighting almost comes out top of the priority list. Proper lighting can enhance mood and ambience as well as improving functionality of a room or space.
There are two basic types of light to start with; natural light and artificial light. A designer always looks at the best ways to use as much natural light as possible. Ways to make good use of natural light includes strategically placed windows and skylights as well as features controlling the flow of natural light including shutters, blinds, curtains and other window treatments.
Artificial light can be considered supplementary to natural light and kicks in as soon as natural light alone is scarce. We often look at lighting as general -, task -, and accent lighting.
General lighting is the overall illumination of an area including overhead lighting. In addition to this task lighting is added to light up certain areas for work, play and study. This includes lighting to illuminate work areas in the kitchen, the vanity in the bathroom and the reading nook in the office. Accent lighting is strategically placed to illuminate art, doorways, steps, focal points, furniture and more.
And this is where the fun starts, by choosing sensible lighting for different uses and areas in the home or office. Well-designed lighting in modern styles serves double duty and in addition to just providing light, can become a real feature in any given space. Interior Designers uses lighting to draw the eye upwards, to and away from features as well as to create separate areas in any given space.
Deborah Garth uses lighting in a clever and innovative way. For her it is about more than just light. It is about the art found in the fixtures, the mood it creates and the pleasure it brings to the eye.
