Spotlight: Meet Dan Saks, Owner of Saks Corner
Dan Saks has had a hand in all things creative for several years. As the owner of Saks Corner, he is now involved in the design and manufacture of beautiful mid-century inspired furniture, based in Cape Town, and ideal for modern living and stylish workspaces. We chat to Dan about how Saks Corner has evolved over the years and the exciting projects they are currently involved in.
Tell us about your background?
I started out as a photographer, then papermaker, then framer. I must have traded on every craft market in Cape Town before finally opening my vintage furniture shop Saks Corner
So, how did the company come about and what is your ultimate focus?
Saks Corner started out 14 years ago re-inventing and refurbishing vintage furniture. It led to an appreciation for the design, quality and accessibility of mid-century furniture. We are therefore inspired and focused on providing these values to our own designs.
What personally inspires you in your working life?
Experimentation with different materials and processes, problem solving and finding new ways of looking at things.
What are some considerations when creating pieces?
I consider if the design will serve its purpose in both function and in its aesthetic form. Furthermore, I try to imagine how the user will interact with it and if they will get value from it.
What is your favourite current design?
The Reed cabinet with its fanned out barrel sides is the current design which most excites me most with all the possible options and finishes.
Any exciting projects or collaborations you are involved in?
Nandos has always offered me a platform and opportunity to explore new designs while keeping them true to Africa’s rich cultural heritage and design. I am currently working on a new range of condiment stands and wash stations.
Which furniture designer inspires you?
Eero Saarinen because he was not afraid to explore new materials or processes and he managed to create so many wonderfully comfortable, shapely designs synonymous with the era.
The perfect place in your home to indulge?
Without a doubt spending a long day working hard in my courtyard garden which is abundant with a variety of life.
What’s your personal motto?
There is always a way to improve, re-imagine and learn new things.
A place you visited to unwind in Africa?
Fly fishing in Magobaskloof with its rolling tea plantations and Azalea coloured verges is a hard place to beat.
What are you wanting from 2022?
Sadly, I needed to close my showroom in 2021 and I would love to be more connected to customers through my website and social media platforms.
You can check out Saks Corner online and explore the various collections on offer.
