OKHA Presents Mesa
OKHA presents Mesa – a bold table inspired by the hidden beauty of naturally fallen timbers. Mesa, an isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides, found in arid and semi-arid areas.
Inspired by the hidden beauty of naturally fallen timbers, Mesa is crafted from Syringa wood cleared from the banks of the Berg River in South Africa. The deep and rich colour of the wood, resembling liquid rust, exudes vibrancy and boldness. This therefore makes it a truly captivating material for the tabletop.
The design of Mesa is a true exploration of scale. The timber slabs being massive in size, showcase the immense mass of a single, solid material form. The inherent and hidden qualities of the wood, including its colour, tone, and grain, are allowed to shine, as OKHA’S Creative Director, Adam Court sought to bring the wood back to life.
Fusion and character
Mesa tells a story of cultural fusion and sustainable craftmanship, bridging chapters of past and present. Through the vibrant Syringa wood, it invites its owner to work, live, and share space with a timeless piece that embodies artistry, personal narrative, and a commitment to sustainability.
Mesa reflects Court’s cultural past and present, with references to Africa and the UK. The colour of the wood is reminiscent of the rich, red clay earth of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, while the design of the legs is influenced by David Bowie’s iconic lightning bolt from his album, “The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & Spiders from Mars”. Mesa is a cultural bridge, merging chapters and telling a narrative that is both past and present, with hints of future explorations.
In the creation of Mesa, a sustainably conscious approach is embraced. This subsequently ensures that all elements, including the Syringa wood, are utilized with minimum waste. The by-products generated during the woodworking process, such as sawdust, are therefore collected and repurposed. This further reduces the environmental footprint.
