Panton Chair
An iconic design, the Panton Chair was first conceived by Verner Panton, an inventive Danish designer whose work was characterised by his masterful use of colour, in 1959, with the first chairs being produced, in collaboration with Vitra, in 1967.
Yet, it wasn’t until 1999 that the chair could finally be manufactured by its original conception – out of durable, dyed-through plastic with a lustrous matte finish, explains Vitra.
The first-ever all-plastic chair made in one piece (and 100 percent recyclable) with a cantilever design, the Panton Chair has gone through several production phases over the years.
As popular now as it was when it was first introduced to the market, the Panton Chair can be seen in homes and museums across the globe.
“Due to its expressive form, it has become an icon of the twentieth century,” says Vitra, adding that the chair is not only sought-after for its aesthetic appeal but also its functionality.
“The comfort of this chair results from the combination of a cantilever structure with an anthropomorphic shape and a slightly flexible material. It can be used individually or in groups and is suited for indoor and outdoor environments.”
Today, three versions of the classic are available through Vitra – the Panton Chair Classic, the Panton Chair and the Panton Junior.
The Panton Chair sports a different height and palette, including glacier blue, soft mint and pale rose, then the Classic version, as well as two soft seat options.
While the Panton Junior is a smaller version of the Classic. Approximately 25 percent smaller than the original, the children’s version is available in both pastel hues and bold, bright shades.
The Panton Chair by Vitra is locally available at Cube Gallery.
