Mash.T Design Studio collaborates with Dolce & Gabbana!
Recognising not only the rich creativity of Johannesburg-based Mash.T Design Studio’s designs but also the vibrant artistry of the continent, iconic fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has selected Thabisa Mjo to participate in its Next Generation Programme.
Drawing from her upbringing, surroundings and experience, the creative director of Mash. T Design Studio, Mjo uses her innate storytelling ability to create designs honouring South African heritage and arts.
As part of the programme, Mjo participated in the Gen D – Designer Generation initiative during Milan Design Week 2024, which celebrates cultural diversity through design. Inspired by their homelands and heritage, participating designers worked closely with Italian artisans to craft a vibrant mosaic of styles and perspectives transcending continents and traditions.
“Thabisa’s selection for the Dolce and Gabbana Next Generation Programme underscores her exceptional talent, visionary outlook, and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of African design,” comments Mash. T Design Studio.
“Through her creations for Dolce and Gabbana, she captures the regal essence of traditional South African women’s attire, often worn during events of great significance. Seamlessly blending elements of Dolce and Gabbana’s Alta Moda, she achieves a harmonious fusion of cultural heritage and high fashion, showcasing the richness of both worlds.”
“Thanks to collaborations with amazing partners like Houtlander and Qaqambile Bead Studio, we’ve had the chance to celebrate the rich diversity of African craftsmanship and culture on the global stage. This opportunity enabled us to seamlessly blend South African and Italian craftsmanship into our designs, creating something unique and special,” concludes the studio.
