Haldane and the Redefinition of Design-Led Outdoor Living
Outdoor furniture has quietly undergone a rebrand. No longer an afterthought or seasonal extra, it has become an extension of how we live, host, and retreat. Few brands understand this shift as intuitively as Haldane, the Cape Town–based studio redefining alfresco living through design-led thinking, artisanal production, and a deep connection to nature.
Founded by acclaimed furniture designer Haldane, the brand operates on a philosophy of small-batch, made-to-order production. Each piece is crafted locally, assembled in Cape Town by a handpicked network of specialist makers, and finished with a level of customisation that allows for genuine self-expression. It is furniture designed not for trends, but for place, climate, and character.
This ethos is perhaps most clearly expressed in the Galapagos kitchen island – a sculptural rethinking of outdoor entertaining. More than a functional surface, it turns food preparation into a social act, anchoring gatherings with the ease and generosity usually reserved for indoor kitchens. Built from high-grade, weather-resistant materials, it balances durability with presence, allowing alfresco cooking to feel intentional rather than improvised.
The Contour Daybed speaks to a more escapist impulse. With its oversized proportions, restrained palette, and softly organic geometries, it invites pause. Available with or without a canopy, it reconnects the user with the rhythms of the natural world, embodying Haldane’s belief that culture and nature should not be designed separately.
Elsewhere, playfulness enters the frame. The Lucky seating range pairs buxom upholstery with elegant steel lines, its waterproofed fabrics and generous curves recalling everything from architectural arches to the charm of a horseshoe. The Dombolo tables – named after the beloved South African steamed bread – embrace sculptural excess, with oversized tubular legs supporting organic tops that feel grounded and celebratory in equal measure.
Completing the picture is the Songololo sofa, a design icon that arcs and pivots into sensuous forms, transitioning effortlessly between indoor and outdoor settings thanks to performance fabrics and UV-stable powder-coated aluminium.
Together, these pieces form a vision of outdoor living that feels considered, expressive, and enduring. At Haldane, the outdoors is not styled; it is lived.
