Cube Design Gallery: Artek Stool 60.
With a penchant for artfully curated interiors, Cube Design Gallery in Johannesburg stocks only the most exquisite furniture and homeware pieces – all carefully chosen to help clients create a stylish yet timeless home.
One such stand-out piece is the classic Artek Stool 60.
Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933, the humble and simplistic three-legged stool has become a statement piece of furniture over the years.
“Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60 is the most elemental of furniture pieces, equally suitable as a seat, a table, storage unit, or display surface,” says Artek.
“Born of modernist ideals and Finnish innovation, its great legacy and continued relevance owe much to Alvar Aalto’s original vision for a universal object made entirely from native birch.
Remaining in continuous production since 1933, Stool 60 has barely changed in either material or form, yet it continues to transcend both time and fashion.
Its simplicity and honesty have ensured its timelessness.
Thanks to its ingenious construction and durability, each stool ages with grace and remains a true companion for life. Stool 60 has accompanied owners in their everyday lives for almost a century, following them from home to home, often being passed on from one generation to the next.”
The stool, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, is available in a wide variety of colours and finishes today. This includes the Stool 60 Kontrasti with its contrasting thermo-treated birch veneer inserts and several lacquer and upholstery options for the seats, including zebra-print fabric and leather.
Artek is locally available at Cube Gallery.
