Barcelona Chair: The Modernist Icon That Continues to Shape Contemporary Interiors
Few pieces in modern design carry the quiet authority of the Barcelona Chair. First conceived in 1929 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona, the chair remains a defining expression of the modernist principle that form should be both purposeful and refined. Its elegant silhouette reflects Mies’s enduring belief that “less is more.”
Created as a resting place for the King and Queen of Spain, the chair’s distinctive crisscross frame is believed to have been inspired by the campaign chairs of Ancient Rome. Though the Barcelona Pavilion itself stood for only seven months, both the building and its furnishings have become lasting symbols of modern architecture. Every Barcelona Chair continues to honour this legacy, from the precision of the polished steel frame to the hand-welted upholstery squares that form its recognisable grid.
Since 1953, when Mies granted Florence Knoll the rights to produce the Barcelona Collection, the pieces have been crafted to the architect’s exacting standards. In 2025, the collection evolves once again. Following consultation with leading Mies scholars, Knoll confirmed that the architect never intended the chair to be limited exclusively to leather. A carefully curated selection of textiles now joins the offering, expanding the possibilities for contemporary interiors. A new ultra-matte onyx frame finish also introduces a softer, more architectural expression of the iconic form.
In South Africa, the Barcelona Chair is available through Barker Street, a company whose own journey reflects decades of design evolution. With showrooms in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, Barker Street connects the local design community with leading international brands, bringing enduring icons such as the Barcelona Chair into modern workspaces, hospitality environments and residential interiors.
