Arthur Arbesser’s very first chair designs
Reminiscent of striped candy, Austrian fashion designer Arthur Arbesser’s very first chair designs are now on show at Milan’s Oxilia Gallery.
The Liquorice Allsorts-striped chairs formed part of the designer’s inaugural furniture collection, In a Box, which premiered at last year’s Triennale Milano.
Dubbed Pemo, the chunky, colourful chair designs are characteristic of the designer’s bold, colourful fashion collections, and nine of the playful chairs now form part of the Nove Pemo exhibition at the gallery.
“The smooth yet precise shape of the chair acquires a mesmerising sense of motion as it interacts with the linear graphic surface. This three-dimensional amalgamation of patterns and colours evokes an immediate feeling of joy through the harmonious interplay of angles, curves, and lines,” reads the exhibition brochure.
Apart from the striped design, what makes these chairs really fun is their size: the chairs are sized for children, making them appear almost toy-like.
“’I love small chairs and stools – for all ages,” the designer wrote about the designs. “This sturdy little sculpture is shiny, fun and looks delicious.”
“The tiny Pemo chair oscillates between a sitting stool and a side table and when juxtaposed with the vivid stripes and prints creates a magnetic stream of movement. It is made of solid composite wood and completely covered with digitally printed high-pressure laminate,” added Arbesser of the limited-edition design.
