Homewood Dare to Design a Truly Unique Piece of Solid Wood Furniture
Homewood Dare to Design a Truly Unique Piece of Solid Wood Furniture
“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.”
John Ruskin’s quote perfectly sums up one of Homewood’s more recent projects. When tasked with a particularly special custom design by German business tycoons, the solid wood furniture manufacturers, knew they had their work cut out for them. However, they were in no way deterred by the effort required to make their client’s dream a reality. The rose to the challenge and in the process, pushed their design capacity to an entirely new level.
Homewood were commissioned with the job of handcrafting a cantilevered table that would suit the client’s large dining room. Since the client had imported a cantilevered table from Germany, which they really loved, but was too small to fit the space, they asked Homewood to create them a one-of-a-kind table using the same concept.
Since Homewood had previously crafted all their bedroom furniture in line with their Imbiza range, they decided to echo the curves of this range in the dining room as well to ensure design continuity.
The furniture manufacturers also took the beautifully open dining room space – that overlooks one of KZN’s most breath-taking views – into account and knew they had to create something to live up to this spectacular room.
A Gravity Defying Design
For Homewood, the cantilever concept, incorporated into the Imbiza design style, emerged as a giant ‘boomerang’. The client’s instantly fell in love with the concept sketches and thereafter the design journey soon began.
The design challenge that presented, however, was the not-so-easy task of creating a leg structure that accommodate such a large and heavy slab of wood and that would enable it to appear as if it were floating in space.
While the design and manufacture of the Imbiza Cantilever Table pushed design and engineering limits and came with numerous failures en route, the final item was well worth the effort and was nothing short of inspiring.
Homewood founder, Ian Perry, comments on this project:
“What this job taught us was the importance of embracing challenges in order for us to grow as custom furniture designers and manufacturers. Our failures ultimately taught us many things – things that will guide us in the future when we try push more boundaries!”
