Tseung Kwan O Grows with Car Park Floors from Flowcrete

The rapid expansion of Tseung Kwan O (TKO) in recent years has seen approximately 150,000 m2 of Flowcrete Asia’s specialist car park deck coating range supplied to support its growing transport infrastructure.

The town, situated in Hong Kong’s New Territories, has grown from less than 10,000 residents in 1982 to over 400,000 today. To meet the demands of its constantly increasing population and its growing tourism trade, a large number of multi-storey car parks was required for all the new offices, attractions, residential complexes and community facilities.

Flowcrete Asia has been at the forefront of this work, supplying its high performance Deckshield flooring solutions that will provide the town with reliable, safe and attractive car park floors for the long term.

Francis Tang, General Manager of Flowcrete Hong Kong, said: “When a town undergoes the sort of swift growth that there’s been at Tseung Kwan O, it’s important to create a network of fit-for-purpose car parks that are able to handle the increasing traffic and demand.

“Thanks to our ability to combine state-of-the-art manufacturing with decades of experience and a range of car park specific coatings, we were perfectly placed to repeatedly provide the ideal floor time and time again – regardless of how much was required and what the onsite challenges would be.”

Between 2012 to 2018 the resin flooring manufacturer delivered Deckshield solutions to twelve different commercial and residential projects across TKO’s Areas 65-68. After the success of the initial Deckshield applications, this deck coating range was increasingly chosen for more and more car parks, with nine specifying Flowcrete’s products in only three years!

This included a variety of developments in different sizes and included huge facilities such as Monterey’s 20,000 m2 car park and The Papillons’ 18,000 m2 car park, both of which were completed in 2018 (see below for all the car parks). The scale of these sites meant that the Deckshield floors had to consistently perform to a high standard despite the vast quantities of material required and the inherent complexities of such large projects.

The versatility of the Deckshield range meant that it could overcome each and every flooring challenge regardless of the project’s size or specific demands. For example, Deckshield ID was able to provide intermediate decks with colourful and durable surfaces, Deckshield LBD was ideal for basement levels with rising moisture issues and Deckshield UV protects against exposure to sunlight.

The developers and architects for these projects included many notable businesses from Hong Kong’s construction sector, such as Sun Hung Kai, Wheelock, Chinachem, P&T Arch, Wong Tung Arch and more. All of these companies knew that the car parks would need to present high-end environments that would be up to the standard expected by the tenants occupying the sites.

This was well illustrated at the up-scale shopping mall PopCorn, where the architects chose to use 15,000 m2 of Deckshield ID. This Green Label certified, low VOC and solvent-free polyurethane system was ideal for ensuring a colourful and attractive finish that would maintain its aesthetics despite the traffic, automotive chemicals, wear, use and impacts that car park flooring inevitably faces.

There was a lot of competition for this work and it was Deckshield’s strong reputation and the fact that Flowcrete Asia could point to multiple successful project references that meant it was consistently chosen for TKO’s new parking facilities.

Deckshield car park coatings have become a popular choice throughout Hong Kong and today are a top-of-the-mind product among developers and architects when preparing specifications for large-scale multi-storey buildings.
