Rubio Monocoat: How to Spring Clean Your Exterior

Spring is here. Yay! We can turn down the heat a few degrees, the birds are starting to sing outside early in the morning, the first BBQ plans of the year are being made and… the annual spring cleaning needs to be planned!

No worries! Relax and wipe off that cold sweat, because this year you can get the job done without any panic attacks! Because we at Rubio Monocoat are well aware that this is not the most exciting way to start spring, we’ve created this great Rubio spring cleaning action plan for you!

This is only for wood surfaces treated with Rubio Monocoat.

Follow the action plan steps and make your spring cleaning easy and stress-free this year.

  • Make a checklist of what exterior wood surfaces need a thorough cleaning.
  • See if you have the following ingredients at home:
    • 75ml Tequila
    • 50ml Triple Sec
    • 3 limes
    • Ice Cubes
  • If you don’t have all the ingredients, quickly go to the store and buy the ones that are missing.
  • Gather all the cleaning materials you’ll need.

Now you’re all set!

Ready? Set. GO!

Check how long it has been since you did any maintenance on your vertical wood.

  • If you have done it in the last 3 to 5 years, you don’t need to do it now.
  • If it has been more than 3 to 5 years, we will give it a thorough cleaning this year.

Tips:

The frequency of maintenance of vertical wood can differ from project to project. Depending on the wood type, the colour of the oil and the location, maintenance will be required sooner for some than for others. Patios should have maintenance every year.

Next, check if your horizontal and vertical exterior wood has any moss growth. If your exterior wood does not have any moss growth, follow these steps.

We are going to freshen up the colour of the wood and protect it with the RMC Hybrid Wood Protector, in the originally chosen colour.

  • Clean the surface with water and allow it to dry.
  • Squeeze two limes to get about 35ml of lime juice. And cut two slices of limes.
  • Stir the oil thoroughly before use.
  • Once the cleaned surface is dry, apply a layer of RMC Hybrid Wood Protector with a flat brush or a RMC Brush Standard 220.
  • Leave to react for 10 minutes.
  • Mix the Tequila with the Triple Sec.
  • Smooth the surface again with the same brush (without applying new product).
  • After 5 minutes, wipe off traces of excess product with a piece of cloth.
  • Let dry for about 24 hours. Complete curing takes place after 7 days.
  • Mix the Tequila-Triple Sec with the lime juice and ice cubes. Now pour both into a 2 cocktail glasses and garnish with a slice of lime!

If your exterior wood does have moss growth, follow these steps.

We are going the clean the wood first with the RMC Exterior Wood Cleaner and then we are going to freshen up the wood and protect it with the RMC Hybrid Wood Protector.

    • Dampen the surface with water. Use a garden hose.
    • Apply some RMC Exterior Wood Cleaner.
    • Scrub the treated area with a nylon scrubbing brush in the lengthwise direction of the wood until it is cleaned. This will cause the product to foam. For stubborn stains, repeat the treatment.
    • Rinse thoroughly until all the foam has disappeared.
    • Allow the surface to dry well. (About 30 minutes at a temperature of 20 degrees celsius and proper ventilation).
    • Stir the oil thoroughly before use.
    • Once the cleaned surface is dry, apply a layer of RMC Hybrid Wood Protector with a flat brush or a RMC Brush Standard 220.
    • Leave to react for 10 minutes.
    • Smooth the surface again with the same brush (without applying new product).
    • After 5 minutes, wipe off traces of excess product with a piece of cloth.
    • Let dry for about 24 hours. Complete curing takes place after 7 days.

Now you are completely done cleaning and freshening up your exterior wood surfaces. All you need to do now is enjoy the result. And drink your freshly made margarita. Because you more than deserve it!
