House Makine: How to Embrace A Natural Sleek Look In Your Home

Maharani Tiles and Bathroom specialize in high-end European tile and bathroom products for residential and commercial projects. Their showrooms located in Kramerville (Jhb), Durban and Ballito, showcase some of the most trending collections of wall and floor tiles, porcelain slabs, bathroom sanitaryware and kitchen utility products.

One of their latest projects was a Johannesburg residential project at House Makine. The clients brief was to re-tile the main floor, exterior areas and redesign the bathrooms. The colour tone chosen was all-natural tones.

The main floors were tiled with Maharani’s bestselling 60×120 concrete-look porcelain slab, the Cemento Bianco in a semi-polished finish. This was a large space and the aim was to ensure it created a singularly unique look. The 60×120 size has become ever so popular, especially with residential projects. Maharani therefore offer one of the widest ranges of 60×120 slabs available in the country.

But what makes this 60×120 size so popular? Larger tiles mean you will have fewer grout lines when the tile is laid thus adding to the aesthetic chic of a sheen porcelain floor. Bigger floor tile sizes are also much trendier, and Maharani are all about that trend!

The bathroom walls were tiled with Plot Ivory & Zone Ivory in a matt finish. Matt finish tiles are becoming more and more popular as the industry moves towards natural, concrete and stone looks.

The balcony and garage spaces were tiled with a full body porcelain tile in a grey shade.

When choosing tiles for these areas here a few important points to note:

1. Balcony tiles are outdoors so will be exposed to rain and sunshine, and in more need of cleaning and maintenance. You want to thus choose a tile that will hold as little dirt as possible and that is easy to clean.

2. Water exposure also means that these tiles need to have an anti-slip feature which is measured by an “R” rating. A tile with a rating of R10 or above is good for outdoors. The R rating measures the tiles degree of slip resistance, so an R9 tile has a lower slip resistance to an R13 tile. The rougher the surface finish of the tile, the higher the degree of slip resistance.

3. Garage spaces hold heavy duty items such as cars, toolboxes, cycle gear, golf equipment etc. A heavy duty, durable tile is a must for your garage and can be classified as a fullbody porcelain with a 10cm thickness at the least. Similar to what was specified for House Makine.

4. Garages often also store house-hold detergents, lubricants and hazardous substances. Tiles laid here also need to be stain resistant. Our porcelain tiles all have a nano-seal technology layer that protects the tile from harsh stains and from losing its original aesthetic appeal.
