Flooring Depot: Engineered Hardwood Floors and Traditional Hardwood Floors
One of the questions asked most frequently is “What is the difference between engineered hardwood floors and traditional hardwood floors?” This is why Flooring Depot decided to create a flooring cheat-sheet to help customers better understand these differences.
COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE
Truewood Engineered Hardwood planks consist of multiple layers; a hardwood veneer on top of a high density plywood plank. This layered construction provides greater stability, and reduces expansion and contraction.
Solid Hardwood planks consist of a single, solid piece of wood, making it more susceptible to warping and movement in humid or dry conditions.
INSTALLATION
Truewood floors are comparatively easier and quicker to install than traditional hardwood floors. Additionally, Truewood can be installed over cement substructures and underfloor heating systems.
Installing solid hardwood floors can be more costly, labour-instensive and time consuming than engineered flooring.
MOISTURE-RESISTANCE
Truewood offers better resistance to humidity and moisture.
Solid hardwood floors are more vulnerable to moisture, which may lead to warping, cupping and gaps between planks in humid environments.
OVERALL PERKS
- Stable in humid environments
- Simpler, faster installation
- More cost-effective than traditional hardwood
Flooring Depot currently offers two designs in the Truewood range:
Truewood Sand UV Hardwood – Plank dimensions: 15/3mm x 180mm x 2400mm
Warranty: 10 years (Terms and conditions apply. Yearly maintenance recommended for stain longevity.)
Truewood Smoked Oak UV Hardwood – Plank dimensions: 10/3mm x150mm x1200mm
Warranty: 10 years (Terms and conditions apply. Yearly maintenance recommended for stain longevity.)
To further ensure a high quality product, the Truewood range is finished with UV oil from Belgium-based woodcare expert, Ciranova.
Ciranova’s UV oil creates a smoother, matte surface compared to traditional gloss lacquer and varnish finishes. This oil penetrates into the wood where it crystalises in the fibres, leaving a transparent, smooth topcoat. This water-repellent matte finish not only looks beautiful, but is easier to maintain and aids in camouflaging imperfections.
The Truewood range is available to purchase online or from your nearest Flooring Depot showroom. To find a showroom near you and view respective trading hours, simply click on the “STORES” tab on our website.
