Crafting a Legacy: The Story of Saleh Abrahams and Constantia Fabrics

Saleh Abrahams

Saleh Abrahams

In a quiet corner of Cape Town, where creativity meets craftsmanship, Saleh Abrahams is weaving more than just fabric—he’s weaving a legacy. As the founder of Constantia Fabrics, a boutique textile house known for its bold prints and artisanal spirit, Saleh has grown from a self-taught designer working from home to a nationally recognized name in handcrafted design. With a passion for storytelling through textiles, a commitment to local production, and a flair for colour and culture, his work is now gracing interiors across South Africa and beyond. This is the story of how one designer turned a dream into a destination.

A Self-Taught Designer with a Passion for Print

Since 2007, self-taught South African textile designer Saleh Abrahams has been quietly reshaping the landscape of handcrafted design. What began as a personal journey has evolved into a business rooted in originality, cultural inspiration, and fine craftsmanship.

“I’ve always believed that design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about storytelling through fabric,” — Saleh Abrahams

From Home Studio to Constantia Showroom

In 2009, Saleh launched Constantia Fabrics—initially from his home. Today, that humble beginning has transformed into a 350-square-meter showroom nestled in Cape Town’s scenic Constantia. From this vibrant space, Saleh’s creations now reach clients across South Africa, and as far as Europe, Australia, and Paris.

Inspired by Nature, Crafted by Hand

Constantia Fabrics is known for its artisanal-inspired, handcrafted textiles—each one infused with Saleh’s signature sense of colour, detail, and organic design.

Among the standout collections are:

  • African Weaver Bird
  • Indian Block Designs

Both ranges have become instant favourites, each already in their third reprint within just three months—a testament to the demand and timeless appeal of Saleh’s work.

Proudly Cape Town Made

All fabrics are locally printed in Cape Town, keeping production close to home and quality under direct supervision. This proximity ensures Saleh remains involved in every step of the process, from concept to finished cloth.

“Being hands-on allows me to maintain the integrity of the design and support our local industry at the same time.” — Saleh Abrahams

A Conscious Approach to Textile Design

Sustainability plays a central role at Constantia Fabrics. The studio is committed to reducing environmental impact by:

  • Printing on biodegradable textiles
  • Promoting eco-friendly practices
  • Supporting local suppliers and printers

A Blend of Local and Global

While proudly South African in identity, Constantia Fabrics also imports luxurious textiles from abroad, including:

  • European cotton velvets
  • Linen blends
  • European-style decorative fabrics

These complement the local collections and offer a rich variety for curtaining, upholstery, and interior design applications.

Looking Ahead

With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Saleh Abrahams continues to lead with passion, purpose, and innovation. His vision is clear: to elevate African textile design and make locally made craftsmanship globally respected.

“I want our fabrics to be seen in homes and spaces around the world—and for people to know that they were made with care, in Cape Town.” — Saleh Abrahams

As part of this vision, Constantia Fabrics will be exhibiting at Decorex Cape Town next month, showcasing their latest collections to design enthusiasts, architects, and buyers from across the country and beyond. It’s another step forward in growing the brand’s presence on the national design stage.

Whether you’re looking for sustainable elegance or bold artisanal expression, Constantia Fabrics is poised to be at the heart of South Africa’s interior design future—woven with creativity, care, and cultural depth.
