10 years of Lula Fabrics inspired by far-away places

The true story behind a piece of fabric may take you on a journey into a foreign land where local artisans continue to use age-old crafts to create beautiful, intricate textiles still appreciated today. This is often the inspiration for many fabric creations by Lula Fabrics.

Today the company boasts various ranges of exquisite fabrics and designs, many of which have been inspired by overseas travels, tribal magic and international trends. Since her travels to Turkey in 1996, Lula Fabrics founder, Melissa Kerkhoff, became obsessed with suzanis and any embroidered, handcrafted cloth from Turkey, Uzbekistan and the surrounding regions.

Suzanis were traditionally woven as a gift for a bride’s trousseau by the women in her family and typically tell a story about the village where she comes from and her heritage. The word ‘suzani’ is actually from the Persian word meaning needle. These magnificent embroidered pieces tell a story that will live with you forever. These precious creations have become serious décor items and are used to adorn walls, upholster furniture, dress windows and generally make our living spaces that much more exotic and special.

Lula Fabrics found true inspiration in these sumptuous textures to create a tribal collection of exquisite fabrics. Other fabric ranges include a Spring Collection, African Mischief Collection and Nostalgia Collection, among others. Each range is a feast of colour, interesting textures and rich vibrant patterns and designs to suit many different purposes. And what’s more, this year Lula Fabrics celebrates their 10th anniversary in the industry. To celebrate, they will be showcasing all their designs through the years (with some golden oldies to jog the memory). They also have a weekly competition going so you can vote for your favourite design and stand a chance to win a pair of cushions in your favourite print of the week. They will start by featuring Lula’s debut prints: the timeless Damask, accompanied by the classic Paisley and popular Delicious Monster prints. These prints are where it all began!
