Crafting Vision Through Fabric: The Evolution of FS Upholstery

We sit down with FS Upholstery to explore the brand’s beginnings, creative philosophy, and their vision for the future.

In a design landscape where textiles have the power to define a room, FS Upholstery has become a trusted name for those seeking fabrics that elevate every interior. From bold patterns and soft pastels to natural textures and versatile stripes, the company offers a curated selection that blends creativity, durability, and everyday practicality.

Their story begins in a humble space—on the second floor of a building above a tire shop. What started as a small operation has grown into a bustling headquarters that the team fully occupies today. Rooted in the belief that quality shouldn’t come at a premium, FS Upholstery has long been committed to offering “quality for less,” providing upholsterers across South Africa with access to beautifully crafted, affordable fabrics. Their expanding website and a fixed R200 nationwide shipping rate have made this mission more achievable than ever.

From small beginnings, FS Upholstery has expanded in both mission and physical growth. Tell us more…

FS Upholstery started off above a tire shop, the second floor in a building that we fully occupy today. Our love for the textile industry is rooted in quality for less. We continuously strive to add affordable options to upholsterers all around South Africa. In recent years this mission of ours has been made possible thanks to our growing website that offers a fixed R200 rate shipping all across the country.

Your motto expresses a belief in “Textiles for every industry & Fabric for every vision”. Can you tell us more about your signature concepts?

Our most distinct signature would be our sample books. These feature a select collection of upholstery fabrics that are carefully organized to display the fabric to its fullest potential. From Corduroy, Woven, Smooth, Soft pile and Dobby, we pride ourselves in giving our customers as many options as available.

How are you following design trends and inspiring others to do the same?

Here at FS Upholstery, we are constantly motivated to inspire by adding to our social media. Our Whatsapp status is a well-known spot for daily content where we showcase colour combinations, mixing and matching plains & patterns and more. Life is full of seasons, some we love more than others. Therefore we put together a set of seasonal-inspired colour combinations that help to bring the vision of creation alive. Summer brings cool deep tones while Spring adds liveliness with gentle easy to digest colours. Autumn is known for depth and coziness while Winter is made for elegance and luxury. With 2026 leaning toward a trend of “inner knowing and expression,” we encourages customers to choose fabrics that reflect not only style but identity.

Sustainability is another thread in your ethos. Can you share more on how this influences your work?

Certainly. We choose paper over plastic for our sample book trimmings and reuse responsibly sourced packaging materials to reflect our commitment to reducing environmental impact. It’s the details that matter and here at FS we find a way to make it count. Our fabric sample books are made to last, therefore these are lined with paper-based sticker edges instead of plastic. Our in-store habits reflect the same care as we reuse cardboard boxes and purchase new ones from responsible sources.

You are growing in presence and work on many successful industry collaborations. Can you elaborate on this?

Our collaborations—although kept discreet—span upholsterers, interior designers, and everyday homeowners, all contributing to a successful 2025. At the same time, FS Upholstery continues to grow behind the scenes: strengthening our TikTok presence, refining marketing strategies, and improving warehouse systems to better meet the evolving needs of the design community.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises an exciting expansion. With more than 15 sample books currently in circulation and over 20 new collections planned, FS Upholstery is preparing to introduce South Africans to a fresh wave of global upholstery fabrics—an abundant mix of textures, colours, and patterns.
