The Best Regional Design At Dubai Design Week 2019
The fifth edition of Dubai Design Week will present its most varied showcase of regional creativity to date. Events, installations and experiences will form a vibrant display of talent and innovative design from the UAE and the wider region’s creative community. Don’t miss out on this exciting week, from 11 to 16 November.
From installations featuring traditional design elements, landmark exhibitions profiling emerging talent, to the launch of Sharjah’s Architecture Triennial, November is the month for design and creativity.
Here are some of the best regional designs you can expect from this year’s Dubai Design Week:
ABWAB: EASTERN PROVINCES OF KSA
Azaz Architects will produce the pavilion for the Eastern Provinces of Saudi Arabia, supported by Ithra. Woven palm fronds, a craft of the Eastern Provinces, will make up a suspended structure that visitors can move through.
GUEST CURATOR: GHASSAN SALAMEH
Dubai Design Week has announced designer and researcher Ghassan Salameh as Guest Curator for the 2019 edition. He will be curating two exhibitions which will highlight the current climate of regional design.
REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS AT DOWNTOWN
With a spotlight on regional talent, Downtown Editions, Downtown Design’s fair section dedicated to limited-edition and bespoke design returns with a fresh selection of designers and studios exploring their culture and heritage through contemporary design.
ENTER ITHRA ART PRIZE 2020
Applications for the third annual Ithra Art Prize closed on 3 October. Saudi and Saudi-based contemporary artists and collectives were invited to submit proposals for the prize, which will see the winning artist awarded up to $100,000 to create a major new commission.
INSTALLATION HIGHLIGHT: UMBRA
Spanish Wood manufacturer Finsa has commissioned Dubai-based design firm Tinkah to produce a gateway to Dubai Design Week 2019, inspired by the Mashrabiya pattern of the region.
ART JAMEEL SHOP COMES TO #DXBDW
The Art Jameel Shop, home for all that’s current in contemporary art, design, architecture and culture, comes to Dubai Design Week this year, featuring hand-picked products and a curated books section.
