The Cape Gallery: An Illusive Reality
Illusive Reality, a group exhibition at The Cape Gallery in conjunction with First Thursday will open on 1st March 2018 at 6:00 pm and will run until 25th March 2018.
The illusive constructs built by an artist on the flat plane of a canvas, project images for our contemplative view. The word super realism was first referenced in the 1970’s and was widely considered a reaction to impressionism. Change and movement frozen in time are accurately represented by the artist often with an emphasis on imagery that requires technical mastery, simulating reflections in specular surfaces… the geometric rigour of our man-made environment. ‘Real’ objects and figures can be staged in surreal juxtapositions evoking associative and dreamlike interpretations. Illusion referenced by the ancient Veidics as Maya is the projection of a memory or idea to create a different reality to what is actually there. In the dark, a piece of rope becomes a snake. In the moment of illusion, the object is taken out of context losing the binding consciousness that connects it to the whole. The artist is the alchemist who in creating a virtual world plays with our perception and reality. Illusive Reality is sure to appeal to the senses boasting an array of artworks from various artists including Marike Kleynscheldt, Peter Hohsl, Tanya Swiegers, Gerbrand van Heerden, Murphy Drummond and Martin Layton. More about The Cape Gallery: The Cape Gallery, 60 Church Street is set in the heart of the old city off the Church Street walking mall, flanked by the colourful Georgian and Dutch facades built by the 18th and 19th century settlers. Behind these facades are some of the oldest and prestigious galleries, antique shops, and auction houses in Cape Town. Central to the tradition of South African painting is the abiding love of the land. Early Cape painters were ‘reporters’ who described the topography, flora and fauna of this fascinating land, a conservative approach which is still favoured by the gallery’s clients today. Recently the emergence of the vibrant street art has added an essentially African character to the work on display. Contact: The Cape Gallery
