12 IZITULO Design Challenge Launches Nationally

Leon at CCXIX, in conjunction with St Leger & Viney, announces their 12 IZITULO Design Challenge.

Following the success of Leon at CCXIX’s 12 Rooms Exhibition, this Cape Town based furniture manufacturer was keen to explore their next project with the local design community. So they’ve created 12 IZITULO. Izitulo means “chairs” in Xhosa, so it’s no surprise that this innovative competition challenges emerging designers to come up with an interesting seating solution.

Designers may present easy chairs, occasional chairs, dining chairs and barstools. Entrants are tasked with creating something original, comfortable and commercially viable… with the real challenge being getting all three of these elements just right. The competition is open to up-and-coming designers living in South Africa and submissions should be received by the Leon at CCXIX team by Youth Day, 16 June 2017.     The top 20 designs will be chosen by a panel of esteemed judges that include: Jo’burg interior designer Donald Nxumalo; St Leger & Viney’s head of product and marketing, Peter Gordon; SA Décor & Design editor, Marcia Margolius; plus Leon at CCXIX’s co-owners, and heads of design, Pim Verdoorn and Ilaria Guidi. Following an interview process with the top 20 designers, the top 12 will be selected. Their designs will be manufactured by Leon at CCXIX, to form part of an exhibition held at the company’s showroom in September. Local interior designers and architects will then be invited to vote, together with the 12 IZITULO judging panel, for their favourite design.

The competition will culminate in a glamorous event to announce the winner, as well as two runners-up, on Thursday 21 September 2017. The winning designer will receive a 12-month design contract with Leon at CCXIX, which will include their share of sales of their designs. There’s also a R10 000 fabric voucher from St Leger & Viney. The second and third placed winners will receive a R5 000 and R2 500 fabric voucher from St Leger & Viney, respectively.
