Workshop Tour with Hoi P’loy: Design Week South Africa
As part of Design Week South Africa, Hoi P’loy opened their workshop doors for a guided tour led by their founders, Ploy and Guy. The tour offered guests a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes that bring their lighting and stationery collections to life – a rare opportunity to see craftsmanship, innovation, and design thinking in action.
The tour began with a warm introduction to Hoi P’loy’s story, how it all began with a single light bulb and grew into a brand known for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. From there, guests were treated to an intimate look at Hoi Ploy’s new high-end stationery venture, Nat & Mae, where classic materials and meticulous detail meet modern sensibilities.
Next came a visit to the lab, the space where brass components are carefully treated to extend their lifespan, and where Hoi P’loy’s consumer-grade 3D printer brings ideas to life. Here, Guy retrieved a 3D-printed component that he would use to demonstrate how Hoi P’loy adapts and refines objects to better suit their workshop’s needs. A member from the production team then showcased the artistry behind the lathe, turning a precision brass component entirely by hand. This was followed by one of the most captivating moments of the day: watching the Heidelberg Platen Press in motion, printing with a satisfying rhythm that has echoed through decades of craftsmanship.
To conclude the demonstrations, Guy revealed how the earlier 3D-printed component would be used to modify an existing piece of furniture, a simple yet clever example of how Hoi P’loy uses modern tools to improve workflow and tailor solutions to their team’s needs. It perfectly illustrated how innovation and tradition can work hand in hand.
The tour wrapped up with an open discussion, inviting guests to ask questions and share thoughts about the processes, inspirations, and stories behind the work. Before heading home, each guest received a small token including a Nat & Mae bookmark, a set of brass hex magnets, and a “Reflections & Resolutions” card fresh off the Heidelberg which served as both a keepsake and an invitation to pause, reflect on the year that’s passed, and set intentions for the one to come. It was a day that celebrated curiosity, craftsmanship, and connection – the very heart of Hoi P’loy.
