Tonic Design
With over 20 years of design expertise and excellence behind it, Tonic Design is arguably one of South Africa’s foremost furniture and interior design practices.
Established in 1999 by Greg Gamble and Philippe Van der Merwe, the Johannesburg-based studio is best known for its stellar portfolio of residential projects, which includes work for British Airways, Babylonstoren and Virgin Active, and its distinctive furniture designs that are undeniably current, enduringly classic and instantly liveable.
This includes Tonic’s iconic Hawker Bench, Miss Daybed and HG Armchair and Cabinet.
“As much as we are driven to create work that is provocative and progressive, we are also guided by the principles and processes of craftsmanship,” comments Greg and Philippe.
“The intersection of these two worlds – invention and tradition – is at the heart of everything we do.
“With the knowledge that design does not exist in isolation, our work pays close consideration to context – the people and places which our solutions must ultimately serve. Empathy and engagement are therefore critical components in our process.
Today, Tonic Design has a showroom in Johannesburg, as well as Cape Town, where the team meets with clients to discuss project needs, including full-service interior design solutions for residential, retail, corporate and hospitality spaces, as well as showcase their ever-growing collection of unique pieces, each handmade by local craftsmen and customisable to client’s requirements.
In addition to their collection, Tonic Design is also a distributor for Classicon, Jieldé, and Andreu World.
