March Interiors: Embracing the Gentle Shift Into Autumn at Home
March in the Southern Hemisphere carries a quiet shift in energy. Summer begins to exhale, the light softens, and autumn slowly settles into daily life. It is not a dramatic turning point, but a gentle pivot, a moment when homes, routines and spaces naturally begin to slow and deepen.
For Toni-Anne van der Meulen, founder of the interior design studio Tones – Spaces with Soul, this seasonal threshold offers an opportunity to reconnect with the emotional rhythm of the home. Her approach views interiors not as static compositions, but as living environments shaped by memory, intention and the changing energy of the year.
March, she explains, is a month of quiet recalibration. As routines return after the brightness of summer, the home becomes a place of steadiness. Small rituals begin to take on new meaning – a cup of tea in a favourite chair, the glow of lamps as the sun sets earlier, or a moment of stillness at the end of the day.
The Gentle Edit
Rather than a dramatic transformation, this time of year invites gentle editing. One shelf cleared, one drawer organised, one corner softened with a lamp, a throw and a seasonal arrangement of branches or fruit. These subtle shifts allow a space to breathe again without losing its familiarity.
The March equinox, when day and night fall into equal balance, also serves as a quiet reminder to seek equilibrium. In interiors, this might mean layering warm textures with lighter materials, balancing soft lighting with natural daylight, or pairing structured design with moments of comfort.
Above all, autumn asks us to move inward. Long-form reading, slow cooking, handwritten notes and conversation without screens begin to replace the urgency of summer activity.
In a world that often feels loud and uncertain, a thoughtfully shaped home can become something else entirely: calmer, softer and more intentional.
