Interior designer John Jacob Zwiegelaar’s aesthetic approach is a holistic one, from the architecture of the space and custom furniture pieces down to the trimming on the last cushion. Since establishing John Jacob Interiors in 2005, John has gone on to create highly bespoke interiors from Cape Town and Johannesburg to London, Berlin and Oslo.

John’s interior design projects are a staple on the pages of Condé Nast House & Garden, House & Leisure, Visi and Elle Décor as well as international editions of Vogue and House & Garden. He has also been awarded numerous accolades, including being twice honoured at the SA Style Awards, placing him firmly on the A-list of South African designers and making his studio one of the country’s most sought after.

The architecture of the entrance hall and stairwell (above) lends itself to the dramatic use of contrasting colour – an example of John Jacob’s skill at glorifying the built space rather than ‘fighting against it’. It’s all about precision, balance and a subtle visual rhythm.
