La Grange Beach House
Overlooking a tranquil, turquoise lagoon, Sumari Krige’s beach house on the South African West Coast is the perfect place to relax and recharge.
Taking architectural inspiration from Greece’s laid-back, white-washed cliff villas with ample outdoor spaces and colourful shutters, the house was designed to maximise its beach-front location.
“We had to be clever with the house plan,” says Sumari, explaining that the plot is long and narrow. “We staggered the rooms quite a bit, which created a very interesting zig-zag shape to the house.”
As luck would have it, this resulted in an airy home with large, easy-flowing social spaces and every room in the house having exquisite views over the water.
A doyenne of South African decor and design, Sumari is well-known for her unique interior style and, of course, her company, La Grange Interiors.
Drawing on years of experience, her vast supplier network and La Grange Interiors’ wide range of unique designer pieces, Sumari was able to imbue the family beach house with her signature style while still retaining character and individuality.
Inside, the home is filled with a variety of textural and tonal elements in neutral hues, dusty blues and russet colours, creating a stylish warm, welcoming atmosphere year round.
“It’s elegant and modern, yet layered,” says Sumari of the decor that combines many choice finds collected over the years, including an antique kitchen island she found in an old butchery in Europe, vintage Mediterranea-style tiles, natural materials, sculptural accent pieces and contemporary African art.
Equal parts relaxed and refined, “it’s a place to spend quality family time,” Sumari concludes.
