Up close and personal
Tell us a bit about your journey – how did you find your way into the world of interior design, and what inspired you to launch Living Inspired Interiors?
My journey into the world of interior design is deeply personal and rooted in both passion and resilience. I studied at Inscape College, but sadly had to pause my studies when my only brother was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident. His recovery required full-time care, and I stepped in to support my family as he rehabilitated from serious brain injuries. Though I never completed my degree, I immersed myself in the working world while staying closely connected to the design industry – taking on small renovation projects and revamps of apartments over the years.
After Covid, I felt an overwhelming pull to return to what truly fulfilled me, and so Living Inspired Interiors was born. What began as an online décor concept has evolved into a full-scope interior design studio offering curated interiors, full residential and commercial renovations, and bespoke design elements. Every step has been a blend of intuition, purpose, and creative growth.
As a woman in the South African design industry, what has been your proudest moment so far?
One of my proudest moments was recently hosting an exclusive evening with renowned South African artist Nelson Makamo. Curating an intimate dinner and private exhibition at his studio with selected guests was a celebration of art, design, and connection. It affirmed the power of collaboration and how design can bring people together in truly meaningful ways. Being acknowledged and trusted in spaces like these has been deeply rewarding.
This year’s theme at 100% Design – “The Future of Living.” What does that mean to you, and how is it reflected in your work?
The future of living, to me, means designing with intention – creating spaces that go beyond beauty to support how we live, work, and connect in a constantly evolving world. It’s about flexibility, functionality, emotional wellness, and sustainability. In my work, this translates into curated spaces that respond to individual lifestyles – whether through multifunctional zones, timeless aesthetics, or material choices that prioritise wellness and longevity. The future is personal, and design should feel like it was made just for you.
Africa in the spotlight
What role does African heritage, culture, or context play in your creative process?
Africa is a constant source of inspiration. The richness of our textures, storytelling, craftsmanship, and rhythm informs much of how I approach design. Whether it’s working with local artisans, incorporating pieces that reflect African landscapes or layering earthy tones with bold character, I find ways to weave culture into contemporary living. Designing in Africa means designing with soul.
What do you believe sets South African design apart on the global stage?
South African design is rooted in authenticity, diversity, and ingenuity. We have an unmatched ability to blend heritage with innovation, and create layered, emotionally resonant spaces. Our design language is expressive and rooted in story, every piece, palette, or form carries meaning. That’s what makes it powerful and deeply global in appeal.
Sustainability, wellness, and community are shaping the design world. How do these values influence your design choices?
These pillars are at the heart of how I approach every project. I believe design should nourish – mind, body, and environment. I prioritise materials that are sustainable and durable, support local craftsmanship to strengthen community ties, and create environments that promote calm, connection, and well-being. Design isn’t just about what you see, it’s about what you feel.
How do you approach designing with both purpose and beauty in mind?
Purpose and beauty go hand in hand in my process. I begin by listening, understanding the heartbeat of a space and its inhabitants. From there, I craft a design that balances function with feeling. Every detail, from the flow of a room to the choice of textures and light, is considered. To me, beauty isn’t just aesthetic – it’s how a space makes you feel at home, empowered, or inspired.
Women take centre stage
What does it mean to you to be included in the Women in Design showcase at Decorex Africa 2025?
It’s an immense honour to stand among so many remarkable women shaping the future of design. Being included in this showcase is not only a recognition of the journey I’ve walked, but also a celebration of the strength, creativity, and resilience women bring to this industry. It affirms that our voices matter – and that together, we’re designing a more inspired, inclusive world.
Who are some women (in or outside of design) who inspire you and why?
Kelly Hoppen has long been an icon of understated elegance and timeless interiors. Her ability to build an international design brand is hugely inspiring. Locally, Bilala Mabuza’s Afro-modern aesthetic and fearless use of culture in her work is something I deeply admire. Beyond design, I’m inspired by women who lead with heart – those who create, uplift, and dare to redefine what’s possible.
What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter the world of interiors or design entrepreneurship?
Start where you are, with what you have, and let your passion be your compass. Don’t be afraid of unconventional paths – your journey is uniquely yours. Stay curious, stay inspired, and surround yourself with those who uplift your vision. And most importantly, trust your instincts – some of the best designs come from intuition, not just instruction.
What’s next for you and your studio – any exciting projects or collaborations you can share with us?
We recently wrapped up a full-scale residential transformation in Morningside, Johannesburg – a project that’s been a true labour of love, from reconfiguring floor plans to designing every detail of the interiors. Alongside that, we’re working on several exciting new residential projects across Johannesburg, including a modern, soulful family home in Houghton, another penthouse apartment, also situated in Houghton. We recently also completed a luxurious home in Athol, Dainfern and Waterfall. Each project offers a unique brief and creative opportunity to explore different narratives in design. I’m also exploring more curated collaborations with local artists and expanding our bespoke décor line. The vision for Living Inspired Interiors continues to evolve – and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
