LIM’s Quiet Luxury on the Cape Coast: An Interior Rooted in Rhythm & Restraint
Perched high above Saunders Rock Beach, where sunbathers scatter umbrellas like confetti and the Atlantic stretches out in endless, electric blue, this historic Cape Town apartment offered its designers a rare gift: a canvas already rich in light, proportion, and a sense of place. Clean architectural bones, crisp white walls, glossy joinery and marble surfaces set the tone, forming a cool, pared-back foundation that invited both refinement and warmth.
From there, the palette began to draw itself from the view. Timber accents, soft sheers and tactile textiles grounded the space, while bleached oak floors, pale hides and fine sisal rugs layered in depth without disturbing the serenity. Into this calm composition came colour, subtle but intentional. Notes of blue, green, yellow and a trace of tangerine echo the seaside scene just beyond the balcony, weaving a lively undertone of Cape Town’s coastal energy throughout the home.
The master bedroom takes this narrative in a softer, more romantic direction. Coral and blush tones nod to shells, sunsets and shoreline botanicals, while rich chocolate accents steady the palette. The result is intimate yet breezy – a space anchored in its surroundings without ever feeling literal.
It’s an interior that embodies what LIM has championed for decades: simplicity enriched by craftsmanship, minimalism softened by humanity. Founded in 1997 by Pauline Mutlow and now led by Andrea Gazet du Chatellier and Marc-Anthony Hewson, LIM continues to prove that “less is more” is not a constraint but a creative lens. In this apartment, that philosophy finds its truest expression – a quiet, contemporary haven shaped by restraint, detail and the rhythm of the sea.
